Story
After nearly 20 years of inhaling solder fumes, I finally decided to build a proper fume extractor. But this isn't your standard "strap a carbon filter to a fan" setup. This DIY fume extractor features both a HEPA filter and an activated carbon filter, providing a robust solution for capturing solder fumes efficiently.
Parts List
- Fan: A salvaged 24V fan.
- HEPA filter sheets: Customizable to fit the desired size.
- Activated carbon foam filters: Purchased in bulk to replace as needed.
- DC speed controller: Rated for 3-35V at 5A.
- USB-C PD module: 20V output for power supply.
- 3D printed enclosure: Designed to house all components securely.
The enclosure was designed to allow easy replacement of both the carbon and HEPA filters. It features a slot-in mechanism for quick swaps and heat insert fittings for secure assembly. The parts were designed to be easy to 3D print, which does require some super glue for assembly. They fit snugly with minimal post-processing required. Filament choice is flexible based on personal preference. You can purchase the design files over on my Patreon.
The electronics setup includes a USB-C PD module that provides a stable 20V power supply to the fan through a DC speed controller, allowing for precise speed adjustments. Connections were soldered directly for a reliable and secure fit, with heat-shrink tubing applied to ensure durability and prevent short circuits. The compact arrangement keeps everything neat and minimizes clutter, making it easy to troubleshoot or upgrade in the future.
With all components assembled, the fan effectively pulled fumes through the carbon and HEPA filters, resulting in significantly improved air quality. The modular design allows for easy maintenance and filter replacements, making it a practical addition to any workspace.
1 / 3
- Battery operation for field work.
- Auto stop and start based on soldering iron state.
