The Pro V Board 8 is the eighth-generation programmable automation controller from Wiren Board, designed for flexible integration into both industrial and home automation systems. Unlike traditional PLCs, it supports an open ecosystem and runs software platforms like Node-RED and Home Assistant directly on the device.

The board is supplied with Wiren Board’s own open-source software stack but offers connectors for third-party systems. Developers can fully access the system’s internal environment, enabling custom scripting and flows for a wide range of applications.

It runs Debian 11 (kernel 6.8) and includes support for MQTT, Modbus TCP/RTU, KNX IP, and SNMP, making it suitable for both DIY enthusiasts and professional integrators.

Circuit-Level Monitoring with Multi-Channel Energy Meter

At Embedded World 2025, Wiren Board demonstrated how the Pro V Board 8 can be combined with a multi-channel energy meter capable of monitoring up to 12 circuits independently. This is achieved through split-core current sensors, which clamp around existing wiring—perfect for retrofit installations without rewiring.

In a smart home setup, this enables detailed insight into where energy is consumed. In commercial settings such as retail or data centres, it allows real-time equipment diagnostics—for example, detecting underperforming motors or faulty lighting via power signature changes. Automation scripts can be configured in Node-RED to respond to these events immediately.

Scalable Building Management with Low Hardware Overhead

Each device can monitor a full electrical panel, reducing the need for multiple metering units. The solution is scalable and cost-effective, with a 12-channel setup priced at approximately €300 including sensors.

The board features dual Ethernet, Wi-Fi + Bluetooth, RS-485, 1-Wire, USB-C debug access, and optional 4G LTE modem for remote management. With support for up to four expansion modules—including Zigbee, Z-Wave, CAN, and KNX—it’s adaptable for both residential and commercial automation systems.
