From Maker to Pro: How Arduino Is Powering Industry - Embedded World 2025
At Embedded World 2025, Arduino showcased its Pro series—a product line built to bring the maker mindset into professional and industrial environments. While Arduino began as a go-to platform for hobbyists, the Pro range retains that accessibility while enabling deployment in automation, manufacturing, and enterprise systems.
The core mission remains unchanged: lower the barrier to innovation. Now, instead of just prototyping, developers can take Arduino-based solutions all the way to production. The Pro lineup includes three main categories: Portenta, Nicla, and Opta.
Nicla and Portenta – Edge AI and Modular System Design
The Nicla Vision is a compact board designed for AI at the edge. It combines a microcontroller, camera, onboard memory, and a secure element, enabling machine vision without a cloud connection. It’s ideal for low-power, smart sensing in applications where size and autonomy matter.
Meanwhile, the Portenta family focuses on scalable, modular computing. These system-on-modules come with microcontrollers, memory, security features, and connectivity—all ready to slot into carrier boards. Users can design custom boards or use Arduino’s, all while staying within the Arduino ecosystem and IDE.
Documentation, schematics, and even Altium design files are openly available via Arduino Docs, ensuring developers can adapt or scale designs with confidence.
Opta and Arduino Cloud – Deployable PLCs with Secure IoT
Opta is Arduino’s first fully finished product—an industrial micro PLC ready for DIN rail mounting. It comes cloud-ready out of the box and supports Arduino Cloud for remote monitoring, firmware updates, and real-time telemetry. With Android and iOS apps available, control and data visualisation are easily accessible from anywhere.
Opta can be used to retrofit legacy machines or control new automation systems. It supports modular expansion—officially up to five units, but with flexibility to scale further depending on the application. Opta is also built with security in mind, aligning with ISO/IEC 27001 standards for cloud-connected devices.
